Laser Vision Correction is suitable for most patients with good systemic and ocular health who have blurry distance vision without their glasses or contact lenses. Good candidates are generally patients over 18 years of age (over 21 years of age is preferable), with stable eye prescriptions, regular-shaped corneas, and normal thickness corneas. LVC is not recommended for a small minority of people, such as those with an autoimmune disease like rheumatoid arthritis or those with eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, or corneal disease. Additionally, LVC is not recommended for those with pacemakers or for women who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding. Patients over the age of 40 who have good uncorrected distance vision but poor reading vision are also not good candidates for LASIK or PRK.

After passing a thorough LASIK evaluation including many diagnostic tests and scans of your eyes as well as an eye health exam and informed consent discussion, your LASIK procedure can be performed on a day that suits you.

You will be asked to lie on a bed in the laser suite, where we will administer many anesthetic eye drops (numbing drops). An instrument called a lid speculum will help keep your eyelids open during the procedure, one eye at a time (you do not feel the lid speculum and also do not feel like you need to blink because your eyes are numb), and an infrared laser tracker will monitor your eye movements during the procedure and keep the laser refractive treatment centered on your corneas. It is a completely bladeless procedure, with digitally guided light-pulse technology working to create a thin flap of tissue on your cornea.

Then, underneath that flap, a second laser works to reshape your cornea to the specific requirement necessary for a good uncorrected vision for each patient.

Typically it takes less than 30 seconds of laser time to reshape your cornea and the entire procedure takes around 15-20 minutes.

Our team will monitor you after your procedure and check the status of your eyes before you leave to go home. You will be instructed to sleep/keep your eyes closed for several hours to let your corneas heal properly. We will provide you with eye shields to wear to prevent you from rubbing/disturbing the area. We will also provide you with dark sunglasses to wear on your drive home but feel free to bring your own pair to wear like a celebrity. A friend or family member is required to drive you home.

We will see you back at the clinic the following day to check your eyes and your newly improved vision.

Some patients experience slight pressure or discomfort for less than a minute or so, but you shouldn’t feel any pain during the LASIK procedure. Your eyes will be numb from the anesthetic eye drops. There are no needles or injections.

The beauty of laser eye surgery is its speed and efficiency. Most patients benefit from nearly 20/20 vision the very next day, and then can return to office work as normal but must avoid dirt, dust, sweat, and water environments for one week.
